After Virginia’s wins over Wisconsin and Maryland, we might not be closer to an answer. Wednesday’s performance against Maryland was Virginia’s second-worst defensive effort in the past two seasons. In fact, the only other team to score more than 1.10 points per possession on Virginia since the 2016-17 season was, you guessed it, UMBC.
On the flip side, this is shaping up to be the best offense Tony Bennett has had in a few seasons. Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome are both capable of making shots from the perimeter, while De’Andre Hunter is a first-round prospect. Freshman Kihei Clark allows Jerome to move off the ball, and Jack Salt (12 points) was a pleasant surprise against Maryland.
